TRAVEL TRYOUTS

Travel Tryout Approach

SCOR offers its players an organized and Club-monitored tryout process.  The process is as detail-oriented as possible so that all players can be assessed fairly, without prejudice for an appropriate level, whether it's a travel team or a recreation-plus / house team.  Although the player placement process involves subjectivity, our intent is to do our best at making sure no player is placed on a team that will hurt their individual development.

U10 Travel Tryout Process

Players born in the calendar year of 2014 are eligible to play U10 Travel. In order to accommodate all candidates, one tryout session will be scheduled at the beginning of June (see below for details).

  • All players registered as age appropriate and any younger players wanting to try out as a 'Playup' candidate are expected to attend the U10 tryout session. Our play-up policy can be found in the 'Q&A' section on www.scor.org.
  • Candidates transitioning from Academy 9 will be assessed at Academy 9 practice sessions throughout the Spring season. Academy 9 professional coaches will rank all players from top to bottom, the top being the best (1-30 or as high as the # of registrants). Even with this assessment, Academy players are expected to attend the tryout session.
  • House coaches will have the opportunity to submit a completed 'Referral Form' that promotes House players as potentially Travel Ready.   Regardless, all players are eligible to tryout for Travel.
  • ALL CANDIDATES FOR THE TRAVEL PROGRAM MUST BE REGISTERED, WITH PAYMENT, BEFORE TRYING OUT.

Process:

  1. Each candidate for the Fall ’23 travel program MUST be registered for it, including payment, at www.scor.org to tryout.  Registration closes on June 9th for U10, and June 11th for all others.  If a player does not make a travel team, then a refund or credit will be provided.  (please see refund policy under the registration section of www.scor.org)
  2. If a player cannot attend the designated tryout time, they can be evaluated separately.  If those that cannot attend are existing travel players, coaches will rely on Spring performance.  If those that cannot attend are new to travel, please email [email protected] to arrange for a separate evaluation during a practice time.
  3. Attire:  please do NOT wear any existing SCOR jerseys.  No Academy, House/Rec-plus, or Travel jerseys allowed.  Just wear other athletic clothes, and wear shinguards.
  4. Bring a ball and water.
  5. Arrive 15 minutes early to the session, in order to sign-in at the tryout tent and receive a numbered pinny (vest).
  6. After sign-in, parents are to remain off the fields, only allowed to watch on the side near the ice arena.
  7. After each session, there will be a brief parents meeting to describe expectations / Q&A.

Tryout Approach Reminders:

SCOR strives to have an objective and fair process.

Final decisions on rankings and placements are made by the professional coaching team.

The tryout sessions will include activities from the SideKick Ball Mastery initiatives.  Any player can go to www.teamexcelsoccer.com and familiarize themselves with all 3 levels, depending on age, to prepare for tryouts.

Players who are not offered a travel spot will have the opportunity to join SCOR’s Rec-Plus program.  Recreation-Plus provides quality soccer development, competition against local town teams, and professional coach exposure.

Final roster decisions will be communicated in July, as soon as possible.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact [email protected], and/or Phil Bergen, Director of Coaching, [email protected].
